In 1929, work began in Germany on the development of its own rocket weapons, and in 1931 a special department was created at the Ministry of War to deal with these issues. In 1940, the Wehrmacht already had 158-mm multiple launch rocket systems 15 cm Nbw 41 for direct fire support of ground units. Later, heavier systems using 280 mm high-explosive and 320 mm incendiary turbojet mines entered service. These powerful munitions, weighing approximately 80 kilograms, could fly a distance of about 2 kilometers and were intended to break through enemy defenses in the field or in the city. To increase mobility, the launchers were mounted on various chassis.
