Katyusha rocket launcher systems are a type of rocket artillery first built and used by the Soviet Union during World War II.
Reactive volley fire systems like these deliver explosives to the target area faster than conventional artillery, but with less accuracy and require a longer reload time.
They are fragile compared to artillery pieces, but inexpensive and easy to manufacture.
Katyushas during the Second World War were usually installed on trucks.
Such mobility gave the Katyusha another advantage: it could deliver a big blow at once, and then move before being detected and attacked by counter-battery fire.
This version of the BM-13NM on the post-war ZIL-157 chassis was produced from 1958 to the mid-1960s.
