LAV III is the last light infantry fighting vehicle from the III generation series created by General Dynamics Land Systems; put into service in 1999. Based on the Swiss Piranha IIIH 8×8.
Developed in Canada and is the main vehicle of the mechanized infantry of the Canadian Land Forces Command and the New Zealand Army. The US Army uses lighter armored personnel carriers, derivatives of the LAV III under the name Stryker.
In 2003, the New Zealand Army began replacing its aging fleet of M113 APCs purchased in the 1960s with the NZLAV[1][2][3], and the M113s were retired by the end of 2004.
