M8A1 airfield steel plates were used during the Vietnam War in the second half of the 1960s - early 1970s and were installed by engineering units of the US Army. The plates were connected to each other in a checkerboard pattern or in a row and allowed the construction of both small individual sites and airfields of significant size. Most often, such surfaces were used in army aviation. The sites created in this way could be used to base various aircraft, such as AN-1Q Cobra attack helicopters, light attack aircraft, OV-10A Bronco or O-2 Skymaster reconnaissance aircraft
