F-4 Phantom II is an American two-seat, twin-engine, all-weather, long-range supersonic jet interceptor and fighter-bomber of the third generation.
Developed by McDonnell Aircraft for the US Navy[4], entered Navy service in 1961.
Until 1962, it had the separate designations F4H[b] and F-110 Specter in the Navy and Air Force, respectively, causing confusion and notably leading to the current aviation and missile designation system in which the aircraft received the common designation F-4 Phantom II.
