The Hungarian light tank "Toldi" was a design based on the Swedish light tank Landsverk L-60. Its production began in 1939, the first modifications entered service in 1940. There were four main variants of the Toldi tank:
- Toldi I - armed with a 20mm cannon.
- Toldi II - armored, with a thicker front plate.
- Toldi IIa - armed with a 40 mm cannon
- Toldi III - improved, thicker armor, only 12 copies were produced.
Toldi tanks entered combat in 1941 in Yugoslavia and were further developed in the Soviet Union. The Hungarian command quickly noticed that Toldi I was insufficiently armored and armed when facing Soviet tanks, and decided that some upgrades were needed. Toldi II was introduced in 1942, still armed with an ineffective 20 mm cannon.
