Nagmashot is the first modern heavy armored personnel carrier (APC). It was converted from decommissioned Shot Kal main battle tank hulls (modernized Centurion) in response to the shortcomings of conventional APCs in combat. The name is a combination of the Hebrew term for APC ("Nagma") and the Hebrew word "Batig" ("Shot", which was the name of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) for their modernized Centurion tank from which the Nagmashot was converted). The IDF wanted an armored vehicle to attack heavily defended strongholds - such a vehicle was quickly developed by simply converting the hulls of decommissioned main battle tanks already in service with the IDF.
