The IDF shot Kal Gimel. In 1958, the Israelis were equipped with obsolete re-armed M50-51 Shermans and light AMX-13s, but no modern MBTs. They approached the British government for a session of used Centurion Mark IIIs and Mark Vs, around 390 in total. However, they were modified locally to local specifications quite quickly, earning the name 'Sho't'. The Sh’ot Kal (which stands for “Continental”, simplified to “Kal”) can easily be distinguished by its raised rear end, which allows for the installation of a larger and more efficient American diesel engine. Indeed, they all feature the new Continental diesel engine mated to an Allison transmission. This also in turn helped with the commonality with the fleet of M48/M60s and maintenance.
