Sturmgeschütz III Ausf. A (StuG III Ausf. A) was one of the first variants based on the Panzer III, designed for infantry support and anti-fortification duties. StuG III Ausf. A was introduced into production in 1940. It was based on the Panzer III chassis and differed from it in that it lacked a rotating turret, making it more suited to the role of a self-propelled artillery gun rather than a tank. StuG III Ausf. A laid the foundations for subsequent versions of the Sturmgeschütz III, which continued to develop throughout the war and played a key role in supporting German forces on various fronts.
