The FV601 Saladin is a six-wheeled armored vehicle designed by Crossley Motors and later manufactured by Alvis. Developed in 1954, it replaced the AEC armored car that had been in service with the British Army since 1958. The machine weighed 11 metric tons, had a maximum speed of 72 km/h and had a crew of three. The Saladins were known for their superior performance in desert conditions, and accordingly found favor with a number of Middle Eastern armies. They were armed with a 76mm low-pressure smoothbore gun that fired the same ammunition as the FV101.
