In 1931, the BT-2 wheeled-tracked tanks, equipped only with machine guns, entered service with the Red Army. The turret provided for the installation of a 20-mm or 37-mm cannon, the shells of which could destroy light fortifications and penetrate the armor of weakly protected tanks and vehicles. In order to increase firepower, engineer N.I. Dyrenkov began developing a new model of the tank. One of the options for modernizing the BT-2, created with the help of leading engineer N. Gulenko, was called D-38. In January 1932, the first prototype of this tank appeared.
The D-38, however, proved to be a failed project due to a number of problems, including insufficient crew protection and difficulties with tank armament. As a result, production was discontinued and the tank was withdrawn from
