Despite serious mechanical problems, the British Infantry Tank, or Churchill, earned a high reputation among British armored fighting vehicles of the Second World War. Following in the tradition of the diamond shape's World War I predecessors, design priority was given to heavy armor, wide trench maneuverability, and the ability to move across shell-torn battlefields. Speed was not considered crucial since its main role was to escort and support the infantry. Named "Churchill" after the British Prime Minister, it began entering tank regiments in June 1941.
