The BTR-40 is a Soviet light armored personnel carrier of the 1950s, due to the specifics of its purpose, according to Western classification, it is also sometimes referred to as an armored car. It was developed at the GAZ Design Bureau in 1947-1949 on the basis of the GAZ-63 all-wheel drive truck and became the first serial armored personnel carrier of the USSR. Being developed under the influence of the experience of using the US armored personnel carriers delivered during the Second World War, primarily the M3, in the weapons system of the Armed Forces of the USSR, the BTR-40 served as a light armored personnel carrier, in parallel with the heavier BTR-152.
