The project of the self-propelled gun, called the schwere Betonknacker, was ready at the beginning of 1939. Work on the development of a heavy bunker fighter was entrusted to Rheinmetall Borsig, who was also the author of the 12.8 cm Flak 40. Alkett, the tank-building division of Rheinmetall Borsig, was directly involved in the installation of weapons.
