To counter the threat of the Russian T34 tank, the German Tiger I heavy tank was adopted into service in 1942. Despite its excellent overall design, minor mechanical problems were inevitable in any newly developed equipment. In addition, some modifications were suggested by combat-experienced crew members. The most important of these was the replacement of the commander's cupola. The original dome was quite tall and its portholes used bulletproof glass, providing only limited visibility. From July 1943, a new turret with seven periscopes and a side rotating hatch was provided, as well as a ring mount for an anti-aircraft machine gun.
