The Sturmgeschütz III or StuG III is a German 75 mm medium assault gun (sturmgeschutz) of World War II, developed on the basis of the Panzer III medium tank. It was developed as a light self-propelled artillery installation for direct fire support of infantry on the battlefield, however, it found distribution as an effective means of combating armored combat vehicles - a tank destroyer.
The full official name of the machine is Gepanzerte Selbstfahrlafette für Sturmgeschütz 7.5 cm Kanone. The assault gun was serially produced in various modifications from 1940 to 1945 and became the most massive example of Wehrmacht armored vehicles (9,408 assault guns were produced).
