The FV4034 Challenger 2 is the third-generation main battle tank of the British Army, which is in service with the armies of the United Kingdom, Ukraine and Oman. It was designed and built by the British company Vickers Defence Systems, now known as BAE Systems Land & Armaments.
Vickers Defence Systems began development of the Challenger 1 successor as a private enterprise in 1986. The Ministry of Defence ordered a prototype in December 1988. In June 1991, the Ministry of Defence placed an order for 140 vehicles, and another 268 were ordered in 1994.
