This vehicle was proposed in the early 1970s by the Kharkov Design Bureau as the NST-74 ("New Medium Tank - 74"). It turned out to be more of a concept than an actual design that Soviet industry could build in the 1970s. The 1972 T-74 concept proved not to be very good, while the 1973 concept had several key improvements over the 1972 concept - improved gunner position (later improved in 1974), gun mount, ammunition storage, SLA principles, crew accommodation. .
