High performance qualities of the ZIL-157 truck made it an excellent base model for various army vehicles - fuel trucks, mobile command posts, radar stations, transport and launchers for anti-aircraft missiles, ambulances, multiple launch rocket systems. ZIL-157 trucks were in service with the armies of the Soviet Union and the Warsaw Pact, the armed forces of Africa, Asia and the Middle East and were widely used in various local conflicts of the 50s-70s.
