The Eland-90 was developed for the South African Defense Force (SADF) in South Africa's first major arms program after World War II, with prototypes completed in 1963. By 1991, 1,600 examples were produced for domestic production and export; Notable foreign operators included Morocco and Zimbabwe. Local overhauls based on experience from domestic operations resulted in a vehicle capable of withstanding South Africa's unforgiving conditions and the SADF's highly mobile operating style.
