The ZIL-131 truck with a 6x6 wheel arrangement and a carrying capacity of 3.5 tons replaced the ZIL-157 in the Soviet army. Serial production of the ZIL-131 began in 1966 at the Likhachev Moscow Automobile Plant. These trucks were reliable and easy to maintain, and had high cross-country ability. A number of special vehicles were developed on the basis of the ZIL-131, including mobile command posts, fuel tanks, and multiple launch rocket systems.
