During the Second World War, the BM-13-16 Katyusha multiple launch rocket system became a symbol of Soviet rocket artillery might. After the war, the launch system was installed on a new ZIL-157 chassis with high cross-country ability. The artillery part of the system is formed by 8 double-sided rail-type launch guides with 16 M-13 (132 mm) rockets. The BM-14-16 multiple launch rocket system was developed in the early 50s. The artillery part of the system consists of 16 launch tubes with 16 M-140 turbojet projectiles. The BM-24-12 MLRS was the most powerful rocket system of its class in the world in the mid-50s – early 70s.
