The IL-131 was the main all-terrain truck of the Soviet Army in the 70s and 80s. Its serial production began in 1967. This truck was distinguished by its high reliability and cross-country ability.
The basic model was used mainly as a personnel carrier or a 5-ton truck.
These trucks were supplied to the Warsaw Pact countries, as well as to many countries in Asia and Africa.
From 1967 to 1990, about 1,000,000 trucks were produced at the ZIL plant. The improved model ZIL-131N was produced since 1986, then production was transferred to the Ural Automobile Plant.
