The most numerous and advanced French armored vehicles of the Second World War was the AMD-35. It was developed by Panhard as a reconnaissance vehicle for cavalry.
Its serial production was started in 1934. It was called the Panhard 178. These machines had rear-wheel drive engines and four-wheel drive. Their main armament was a 25-mm anti-tank gun. By 1940, 551 cars were produced.
As part of the cavalry units of the French army, the Panhard 178 took part in combat operations in the spring of 1940. More than 200 machines were captured by the German army and under the designation Pz.späh.204 (f) were used in the Wehrmacht. Some of them had a CDM turret with a 47 mm gun.
