In 1940, after the start of World War II, the US General Staff ordered various factories to develop a light multi-purpose vehicle with all-wheel drive. American Bantam Company, Willys Overland and Ford Motor Co. competed with each other. The Willys prototype was chosen, which, after an initial run of 1,500 cars, was launched into mass production in early 1941 and reached a total output of 640,000 units. of which 277,000 units were manufactured by Ford under a license agreement. This shows that during World War II, the Jeep was the most common light vehicle in the military industry.
