The most numerous and famous French armored vehicle was the AMD-35. It was developed by Panhard as a reconnaissance vehicle for cavalry.
Its serial production was started in 1934. It was called the Panhard 178. These machines had a rear engine and four-wheel drive. Their main armament was a 25-mm anti-tank gun. By 1940, 551 cars were produced. As part of the cavalry units of the French army, the Panhard 178 took part in combat operations in the spring of 1940. When used correctly, these machines could withstand German tanks and armored vehicles of all types.
