After 1933, Germany began to build a modern army. An important part of the Wehrmacht's motorization was the production of special all-terrain passenger cars. Three types of unified passenger cars were developed - light, medium and heavy. All of them had four-wheel drive, independent suspension and a simplified open body.
The light all-terrain vehicle - leichten gelände Einheits Personen-Kraftwagen - was produced by Stoewer, as well as BMW and Hanomag from 1936. From 1940 to 1943, Stoewer produced a simplified Type 40 without rear wheel steering. In total, about 13,000 le.gl.Einheits-Pkw were produced.
