The Cannone da 149/40 was a heavy gun that served in Italy during World War II. It was supposed to replace the outdated Cannone da 149/35 A, but the small number of units produced prevented this. By 1940, an order had been placed for 590, but by the end of September 1941, only 51 were in service. The weapon, captured by the Germans after the surrender of Italy in 1943, was adopted as the 15 cm K 408(i). Ansaldo produced a batch of twelve for the Germans in April 1944.
It was a good design, despite the odd decision to use shovel plates that had to be driven into the ground to secure the gun in place. It was usually broken into two loads for transport, but could be broken into four loads for mountainous terrai
