American 57-mm anti-tank gun M-1 on M-2 carriage. The idea of producing the British 6-pounder armament in the USA was expressed by the US Army Administration in February 1941. The American version, classified as a standard replacement as the 57-mm M1 gun, was based on the 6-pounder Mark II. Production began in early 1942 and continued until 1945. The M1A1 variant used American combat tires and wheels. The M1A2 introduced the British practice of free-running, meaning that from September 1942 the gun could be moved by the crew by pushing and pulling the breech, rather than just with a geared rotation.
