On December 13, 1577, five galleons left the port of Plymouth in England. They were led by Frank Drake on the Pelican galleon.
When the expedition passed through the Strait of Magellan, "Pelican" was renamed by Drake to "Golden Doe" in honor of one of the sponsors of the trip, Sir Christopher Hatton, whose coat of arms featured a golden doe.
