It is named after the Spanish explorer Juan Sebastian Elcano, the captain of the expedition - after the death of Fernando de Magallanes - who completed the first circumnavigation of the world in 1522.
Launched in 1927 at Cadiz, Juan Sebastián Elcano serves as the Navy's training ship for the Marine Guard. In the second semester of their fourth year of service at the Naval Academy, they made a training trip, a six-month trip to America and about twenty thousand miles of travel. Currently, he continues to sail the seas of the planet, as he is still active.
