During the reign of Elizabeth I, England began to establish its own sea trade routes. One such trip was organized in the strictest secrecy, under the guise of a trip to Egypt, by Francis Drake. On December 13, 1577, five sailing ships left Plymouth for "Alexandria" ("Pelican", "Elizabethan", "Marigold", "Swan" and "Benedict"). Only after he reached the Pacific Ocean, beyond the Straits of Magellan, did Drake, in order to perfect the disguise of his mission, rename the Pelican the Golden-faced.
