The Swiss Guard (Papal Swiss Guard, Italian Guardia Svizzera Pontificia) is a military unit currently responsible for the security of the Pope and is a kind of "armed forces" of the Papal State. It was formed during the Italian Wars (1494-1559) in 1506 from the best mercenaries of Europe at that time - Swiss soldiers. The tradition, according to which only citizens of Switzerland are accepted into the unit, has survived to this day, hence its Polish name.
