The UH-1N was developed according to a project by the American company Bell Helicopter in the late 60s. In Italy, a similar version is produced under license by Agusta Westland under the designation AB-212. The AB-212 is a mid-blade, two-blade rotor powered by two 1,342 kW Pratt & Whitney PT6T turboshafts. It is a development of the 205 model, the main difference of which is the extended fuselage. In the first half of the 2000s, AB 212 was extensively updated to improve its operational capabilities. It was equipped with two 7.62 mm rotary machine guns on the rear doors, and the protective equipment was upgraded with anti-missile launchers and additional ceramic and Kevlar armor to protect the crew.
