The Mitsubishi F-2 is a Japanese fighter-bomber developed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) and Lockheed Martin for the Japan Air Self-Defense Force.
The aircraft was created on the basis of the American F-16 fighter under the FS-X program, in which Japan and the USA were represented in a ratio of 60/40. Development of the aircraft began on 21 October 1987, when the Japanese government selected the F-16C to replace the Mitsubishi F-1 fighters in service. In November 1988, Mitsubishi became the prime contractor, signing a contract in March 1989 for the development of the aircraft's airframe and in February 1990 for the development of the airborne radar.
