The first model entered service with the Navy in 1942, the last one with the French Air Force in 1953. A total of 12,571 aircraft of 16 modifications were produced, which is a record for the production of piston-engined aircraft in the history of American aviation. The fighter proved itself to be excellent during combat operations and was in service with the American carrier-based aircraft, the Marine Corps, as well as in the fleets of Great Britain, New Zealand, France and other countries of the world.
