The A-6 Intruder entered service around the mid-1960s to replace older aircraft such as the piston-engined Skyraider and the Skywarrior as a carrier-based attack aircraft. Grumman then developed to U.S. specifications. Navy the A-6A, an "all-weather" two-jet twin-jet tactical bomber capable of operating from aircraft carriers. The Intruder, so called, was characterized by a robust and massive fuselage and by the configuration of the cabin with two seats side by side for the pilot and the weapons systems officer. The A-6E was the improved version, compared to the previous "Intruders", in terms of avionics and weapon systems which allowed better operation in all weather conditions and greater effectiveness in identifying and suppressing targets, especially in the versions
