Ki-61 Hien is a single-seat army single-engine fighter of all-metal construction of the Imperial Japanese Army of the Second World War. It stood out among other Japanese fighters with a design that made it similar to European fighters, and also had additional armor. During the first contacts, the Allies mistakenly considered it a licensed copy of the Messerschmitt Bf 109 or some Italian aircraft.
Developed under the leadership of Takeo Doi. It was the only production fighter of the Japanese army with a liquid-cooled V-engine. The prototype first flew in December 1941. It entered service in late 1942 under the designation Army Fighter Type 3. More than 3,000 aircraft were built.
