In the middle of World War II, the Royal Navy was desperately looking for a suitable carrier-based fighter. The company's own developments, the Sea Gladiator or the two-seater Fulmar, were either hopelessly outdated or inferior to rival machines. The offshore offshoots Hurricane and Spitfire also failed to bridge this gap. Shortly after the Corsair was introduced to the US Navy, the Royal Navy showed great interest in the aircraft type. Both in terms of flight performance and payload, the Corsair was unmatched. The first Corsairs were handed over to the Royal Navy in June 1943, giving it the name Corsair Mk.I, corresponding to the American F4U-1 standard.
