Production of the FW-190A-3 began in the spring of 1942. It differed from the A-2 only in a more powerful BMW 801D-2 engine with a capacity of 1700 hp (1270 kW) with an increased compression ratio and a more powerful supercharger. The new engine required high-octane fuel - C3 (octane number 96) instead of B4 (octane number 87). The armament remained the same as on the FW-190A-2. The front part of the cabin visor was fitted with 50 mm thick armoured glass at an angle of 25 degrees relative to the longitudinal axis of the vehicle. Factory modification kits (Umrüst-Bausätze) appeared for the first time on the A-3.
