On April 26, 1943, a B-26B-25-MA bomber with serial number 41-31773 rolled off the assembly line at the Glenn L. Martin Company plant in Middle River. At the end of May of the same year, the aircraft and its crew arrived in England, where they were included in the 449th Bombing Squadron of the 322nd Bombing Group. German anti-aircraft guns, which received the general name Flak, posed a great threat to US bombers in combat sorties.
