From the beginning, the Luftwaffe was created for active offensive operations. The basis of their strike potential was bomber squadrons, which were organized into bomber groups, and the groups, in turn, were part of bomber squadrons. A typical airfield on which a Luftwaffe bomber group was based included runways, parking areas, refueling and maintenance facilities for bombers, accommodation for aircrews and ground personnel, ammunition depots, headquarters and air traffic control, and communications facilities.
