The MiG-21UM was the last two-seat version developed on the basis of the E-6 UM prototype. It was practically an "American" glider with improved instruments and avionics to "M" and "MF" standards. New ejection seats KM-1U for the front cabin and KM-1I for the rear cabin were installed. Distinctive features include a UHF antenna on the back in front of the fin, an attitude sensor on the front of the nose, and a forward view instructor's periscope mounted on the rear dome frame. This folding periscope was added due to the instructor's requirement to look straight ahead during take-off and control the aircraft when necessary.
