The Messerschmitt Bf 109 is a German World War II fighter aircraft designed by Willy Messerschmitt in the early 1930s. It was one of the first true modern fighters of the era, incorporating features such as an all-metal monocoque, enclosed canopy and retractable undercarriage. Having received its baptism of fire in the Spanish Civil War, the Bf 109 was still in service at the dawn of the jet age at the end of World War II, during which it was the backbone of the German Luftwaffe's fighter force.
The Bf109G, or "Gustav" series was introduced in mid-1942; its initial variants (G-1 through G-4) differed from the Bf 109F in only minor details, notably being fitted with the more powerful 1,475 hp DB 605 engine. Od
