The P-51 was developed in 1940 at the request of Great Britain, the prototype was created within 120 days. It was the Royal Air Force that gave this type the nickname "Mustang". In December 1943, P-51Bs entered combat for the first time with the 354th Fighter Group of the British 9th Air Force. The bulk of P-51B/Cs in service were assigned to the 8th and 9th Air Forces in England, while a smaller number flew combat missions with the 12th and 15th US Air Force Regiments in Italy and nearby areas. The P-51B/C was the primary variant from December 1943 until March 1944, when the P-51D began appearing in numbers with the 8th AF. However, the P-51B/C remained dominant until mid-1944 and remained in combat until the end of the conflict.
