Tu-144 (NATO reporting name: Charger) is a Soviet supersonic passenger aircraft of the 1st class, developed by the Tupolev Design Bureau in the 1960s. It made its first test flight on December 31, 1968, which became the world's first flight of a supersonic passenger aircraft (the British-French Concorde made its first test flight on March 2, 1969). On June 5, 1969, for the first time in history, a supersonic passenger aircraft broke the sound barrier (the first was a subsonic DC-8 diving at maximum speed from a high altitude).
