The Soviet JS-2 heavy tank was built to counter the German Tiger I tank. The JS-2, which was put into production in December 1943 in the second half of World War II, had a long, powerful 122 mm gun and excellent armor. From August 1944, the hatch on the front of the hull was removed, which significantly improved its frontal protection. The JS-2 was produced at the Chelyabinsk Kirov Plant (ChKZ), and they proved effective as "breakthrough" tanks, as well as for fighting German armor.
