The versatile German StuG III was originally designed as an assault gun, but as the war progressed, it also began to be used as a defensive weapon, providing both an assault gun and anti-tank support. Based on the robust Pz.Kpfw. III chassis, the StuG III had a monobloc design with a short-barreled 75 mm L24 gun mounted directly on the hull, eliminating the need for a rotating turret and reducing the overall height. The StuG III's design allowed for a larger main gun and resulted in significantly lower production costs, making it one of Germany's most important armoured vehicles of World War II. The Ausf. B was the first truly mass-produced StuG III, with over 250 units produced from June 1940.
