The Sturmgeschütz III or StuG III is a WWII German 75mm assault gun (Sturmgeschütz) based on the Panzer III medium tank. It was developed as a light self-propelled artillery mount for direct fire support of infantry on the battlefield, but it has found distribution as an effective means of combating armored combat vehicles - a tank destroyer.
The full official name of the vehicle is Gepanzerte Selbstfahrlafette für Sturmgeschütz 7.5 cm Kanone. The assault gun was mass-produced in various modifications from 1940 to 1945 and became the most massive model of Wehrmacht armored vehicles (9,408 assault guns were produced).
