In the 1970s, the Soviet Union began a development program to replace the artillery tractors of the AT-P series (which were created on the basis of the ASU-57 airborne self-propelled artillery mount) with new generation vehicles.
To meet this requirement, the MT-L was developed on the basis of the chassis of the PT-76 amphibious light tank. MT-LB is an armored version of the MT-L.
Launched in the early 1970s, it was cheap to manufacture as it was based on many existing components such as an engine that was originally designed as a truck engine. It was built at the Kharkov Tractor Plant and under license in Poland and Bulgaria.
